A Diplomat, a Dream, and “The Usual Suspects”
In 1998, Kathy Kriger arrived in Morocco as the commercial counselor for the United States Embassy. Enchanted by the country's vibrant traditions and rich culture, Casablanca quickly won her heart. Following the tragedy of 9/11, Kathy felt an irresistible calling to demonstrate true values of intercultural bridge-building, goodwill, and hospitality. She resigned from government service with a daring dream: to turn the fictional Rick's Café into an enduring reality.
To finance the venture, Kathy designed a flyer playfully borrowing the film’s iconic phrase: “Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, I’d like you to buy into mine.” She christened her company “The Usual Suspects,” and suddenly supporters from four continents sent funds to help her build it. Two years of laughter, tears, and relentless perseverance brought the vision to life.
